An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Modelling Analyst to join the Data & Analytics team, NHS Wales Performance and Improvement. We are looking for a proactive and ambitious candidate with skills in operational research, modelling, data science and/or management science. This is an interesting and diverse role, offering prospects for personal development and career progression.
The work will be wide ranging and varied as the team is tasked with delivering modelling projects and providing advice to the range of Directorates within NHS Wales Performance and Improvement. The successful candidate will work in the Operational Research and Modelling team to support the delivery of modelling projects, provide advice and expertise on problem structuring, the model development process, and analysis and presentation of findings, in line with the delivery of Welsh Government and NHS Wales priorities.
Main duties of the job
The Data & Analytics team encompasses data, analysis, information and knowledge, ensuring decision makers have the right intelligence at the right time to improve the quality, efficacy and efficiency of services to improve patient experience, safety and outcomes.

Your day-to-day role will require you to have a vast array of skills in areas including analytics, mathematical modelling, data visualisation, negotiation and communication to deliver high-profile projects that meet the team's objectives. Where applicable, you will be given a range of responsibilities which may include developing expertise on a specific dataset, analytical method, programming language or modelling tool. You will also work alongside colleagues in the Data and Analytics team, and other senior colleagues ensuring the team embraces innovative techniques to be at the forefront of operational research and modelling in Wales.

Essential criteria
- Educated to degree level in a mathematical, statistical, computer-science, management science or similar discipline OR equivalent qualification OR equivalent level of knowledge and skills
- Specialist knowledge and experience of Operational Research modelling techniques
- Experience of performing complex analytical tasks and creating outputs for use by others
- Experience of communicating complex information to a non-technical audience
- Understanding of Operational Research and Modelling techniques
- High level of understanding of Modelling in NHS Wales and the role of the NHS Wales Modelling Collaborative
- Advanced IT skills with experience of using Microsoft Office applications, and particularly advanced MS Excel knowledge
- Knowledge and experience of specialist computer software, such as SQL, R studio or Simul8 for the production of complex health system models.
- Understanding of organisations policies and principles and the ability to work within these guidelines.
- Clear understanding of current and ongoing issues affecting health services.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and interest areas complementary to Operational Research modelling - e. g. Data Science techniques (Machine Learning and cluster analysis) or Social Research techniques (survey design and evaluation Knowledge of health economics)
- Masters degree in a numerate subject OR equivalent qualification OR equivalent level of knowledge and skills
- Report writing and presentation skills.
- Experience utilising complex datasets related to population health
- Familiarity with medical terminology and coding systems e. g. ICD10, OPCS, Read codes, SNOMED CT
- Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh
