Oxford Health NHS Trust
Are you a Registered Mental Health Nurse looking for a new opportunity? We are looking for a Senior Registered Mental Health Nurse to join the team at...
York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated nurse with excellent clinical knowledge and skills to join our expanding Rapid Diagnostic Centre (RDC) team, working 26.25 hours per week in a fixed-term maternity cover post.
The RDC provides a coordinated diagnostic pathway for patients with serious non-specific symptoms that may indicate cancer or another significant condition. The service supports earlier diagnosis, reduces delays in investigation and improves patient outcomes through timely access to diagnostics, specialist review and multidisciplinary decision-making.
Working within a small, supportive team comprising an Advanced Specialist Nurse, Cancer Care Coordinator and Patient Navigator, you will work closely with consultants, diagnostic services and primary care colleagues. You will assess and support patients throughout their diagnostic journey, from referral and triage through to diagnosis, discharge or onward referral.
The successful candidate will participate in virtual MDT discussions, coordinate investigations and provide expert nursing support through CNS-led clinics.
Based primarily in York, the role requires regular travel to Scarborough Hospital. Flexible working, including agreed home working, is supported. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to earlier diagnosis initiatives while delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
Main duties of the job
As a key member of the Rapid Diagnostic Centre (RDC) team, you will deliver a high-quality diagnostic pathway for patients with serious non-specific symptoms, ensuring timely assessment, investigation, diagnosis and onward management.
Acting as key worker for patients referred to the Serious Non-Specific Symptoms pathway, you will manage a defined caseload from referral through to diagnosis, discharge or onward referral to the most appropriate care pathway. Working closely with GPs, consultants, diagnostic services and multidisciplinary teams, you will coordinate investigations and support timely diagnosis.
You will provide specialist nursing advice, information and emotional support to patients and families, undertaking holistic assessments to identify physical, psychological and supportive care needs.
The role includes coordinating virtual MDT meetings, ensuring investigations are completed and outcomes communicated effectively, while monitoring patient progress to minimise delays in diagnosis and treatment.
You will contribute to the ongoing development of the RDC pathway, promote evidence-based practice and act as a clinical resource for colleagues. The post also involves leadership and supervision responsibilities, participation in audit, service evaluation and quality improvement activity, and working collaboratively with stakeholders across primary and secondary care to support early diagnosis, service improvement and excellent patient outcomes.
