An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Clinical Scientist and Medical Physics Expert (MPE) to join our Diagnostic Medical Physics team on a 12-month temporary basis.
We are seeking a highly motivated Healthcare Scientist Specialist with expertise in Nuclear Medicine and/or Diagnostic Radiology Physics to support a wide range of clinical services across Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE), providing specialist advice on radiation safety, optimisation and compliance with the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 (IR(ME)R 2017).
This is an excellent opportunity to work within a large and innovative NHS organisation, contributing to patient safety, service development, education, training and the implementation of best practice across diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and PET/CT services.
Main duties of the job
As a Medical Physics Expert (MPE), you will provide expert scientific advice to support the safe and effective use of ionising radiation in Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT and/or Diagnostic Radiology services. You will work closely with multidisciplinary clinical teams to ensure compliance with IR(ME)R 2017 and other relevant regulations and professional standards.
Key responsibilities include:
Acting as an appointed Medical Physics Expert for Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and other organisations as required.
Providing specialist advice on radiation protection, patient dosimetry, optimisation and quality assurance.
Supporting the acceptance testing, commissioning and performance evaluation of imaging and dose management systems.
Investigating radiation incidents and contributing to service improvements that enhance patient safety.
Delivering education, training and mentorship to medical physics staff, trainees and wider clinical teams.
Supporting equipment procurement and advising on the selection, implementation and optimal use of specialist imaging technologies.
Contributing to research, innovation and the continued development of Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology Physics services.

Essential criteria
- BSc Honours Physics or equivalent
- Relevant MSc or higher degree or equivalent with specialist knowledge
- Certificate of completion of STP training scheme, or equivalent
- HCPC Registration as Clinical Scientist
- Medical Physics Expert certification with RPA2000
- Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and considerable experience across the full range of working procedures and practices in nuclear medicine physics, diagnostic radiology and/or radiation protection
- Experience with testing specialist NM/x-ray equipment and advanced theoretical and practical knowledge thereof
- Provide scientific leadership and advice to different staff groups in carrying out projects
- Developing and enhancing knowledge. Undertaking CPD sufficient for HCPC registration, and for maintenance of MPE certification
- Experience to deliver teaching and training on complex subjects
- In depth understanding of relevant legislations, national standards and other professional guidelines, as relevant to role
- Able to communicate highly complex information e. g. radiation protection and risk information, to other professional groups, and to communicate effectively with patients, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues
- Able to make judgements involving highly complex calculations, e. g. estimating radiation doses to staff and patient's from patients administered with radioactive materials
- Demonstrate honesty, integrity and respect for confidentiality. Sympathise with patient care in clinical settings
- Influencing a wide range of colleagues in developing and introducing scientific systems
- Able to concentrate when subject to unpredictable patterns such as dealing with complex radiation dosimetry calculations
- Able to plan and organise work to provide a highly specialist clinical scientist and technical service
- Highly developed physical accuracy and dexterity for making precision measurements and adjustments on both test equipment and complex specialist nuclear medicine equipment
- Ability to design and develop specialist image and data processing software to meet specific needs
- Proficient in computer systems etc to set up documents, spreadsheets and databases and extract and collate information for complex calculations such as for radiation dosimetry, and other specialist data
- Ability to adapt plans at short notice when priorities change due to equipment failure or clinical workload

- Management & leadership experience and training
- On Higher Specialist Scientific Register
- Professional recognition and involvement at a national and international level
- Planning and carrying out and managing research, presenting at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals
- Systems thinking for pushing forward NHS matters
- Involvement with Quality Systems and UKAS Accreditation schemes
- Able to present scientific papers at national and international conferences
